Mainly because they are the most reliable drivetrain ever to come out of Germany, although assembled in Alabama. The m113 engine is a million mile sand tested engine from the factory. Ask any Mercedes Mechanic about the reliability of the ML55. Like the G55 which retains the award for the highest resale vehicle on the planet. The ML55 is a lighter, faster, more capable vehicle in almost every way minus the 3 way locking differential of the G55. The ML55 has been clocked 0-60 5.5-6.1. Depending on which article you read. The G55 is a bit of a Kardashian grocery getter. The ML55 is built on a truck chassis, even though it's wrapped in a muscular SUV skin. They are excellent value for the money and they just don't break down. This era is the last of the bullet proof reliable cars. Bilsten coilovers, no silly air suspension to fail. It harkens back before everything Mercedes started churning out was over-complicated with electronics that would fail. Look at its main competitor on eBay. The BMW X5 from this era is arguable one of the worst vehicles reliability wise to ever hit the road. The engines are made of clay, seriously. Hence, the reason why there are over a 100 listed on eBay, and 0 ML55's. You would have a hard time finding any car on the planet that would compete with this at its current state in regards to perception value, reliability, and performance for the money. I am aware of what these cars sell for as I have been watching the market on them every week. Trust me when I say there isn’t one like this in the country right now for sale. The only reason I am selling this one is because I own 3 of them, and I figured 2 is enough. In no way does it look like a 2002 with 98k miles. It's lived the majority of its life in the desert. It's an amazing capable SUV from the ERA of Mercedes when they where analog, not complicated. Unlike my ML63, which suffers from dry lifters, valve body transmission issues, and don't forget the dreaded head bolt issue. The 55's will outlast the 63's.
